The following images came from a question about how mold grows in wall cavities. I thought back to several mold remediation projects and investigations I have done this year. There seems to be some commonality with the distribution of mold type and density. I will never be a graphic artisit bt hopefully they convey the observation, that mold often appears to be distributed along moisture bands. Bear in mind this is science “like” at best. I didn’t set out with rigourous controls and make careful measurements of mold distribution. Individual site may have significant variation. With that caveat, this is what I have noticed at multiple residences and buildings here in Hawaii:
From re-examing the distributions it seems to me there are some implications for tape-lift sampling. If an inspector is taking a very limited number of samples it becomes somewhat easy to over-emphasize or completely miss various types of mold.
